CEU Course Description

American Indian children come from rich and diverse cultural backgrounds, each with its unique traditions, languages, and values. However, studies consistently show disparities in academic achievement between American Indian students and their peers. Additionally, American Indian children often face unique social and emotional challenges stemming from historical trauma, identity issues, and cultural disconnect in educational settings. Educators must be prepared to support their well-being and foster a sense of belonging. This professional development course is designed for teachers and educators who work with American Indian students. Through a culturally responsive lens, participants will explore strategies to address academic gaps, create equitable learning environments, and promote the overall success of American Indian youth. In this course, participants will learn about 1) the unique traditions of American Indian culture, 2) unique challenges that American Indian youth face, and 3) effective strategies and resources for helping American Indian youth succeed in school and beyond.

  2. Discuss the importance of Native American traditions and history
  3. Summarize best practices for creating positive learning environments for American Indian students
  4. Identify components of a trauma-informed teaching approach
